Meet our 1% for the Planet partner in Houston, Texas. As part of our commitment to the 1% for the Planet program, our beekeeping team in Northeast Houston has joined forces with Target Hunger, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting food insecurity in the community. Through this partnership, we aim to support their efforts in providing food and resources to those in need.

ALLEVIATING FOOD INSECURITY IN HOUSTON WITH TARGET HUNGER

Target Hunger’s mission? To tackle food insecurity in Northeast Houston, Texas. This nonprofit was launched in 1989 as a small United Way program and has since grown into what is today a highly successful organization in its own right! They work hand in hand with the Houston Food Bank to help the most vulnerable in this community.

THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN ALVÉOLE’S TEAM AND TARGET HUNGER

With our bees also foraging in the Northeast Houston neighbourhoods, our beekeeping team eventually crossed paths with Target Hunger and reached out to them to firm up our commitment to 1% for the Planet.

“We donated a workshop to them last year. It was a 2 hour long workshop (longer than the usual 1 hour) that combined elements of our “Meet your Bees” workshop and “Information Kiosk”! They seemed to really like the workshop. We talked with them before it started about their garden setup and asked them tons of questions about their crops!”

– Evan Gregory, Beekeeping Team Manager in Houston

HOW BOTH MISSIONS ARE INTERTWINED FOR HOUSTON’S COMMUNITY

As part of their food assistance efforts in Houston, Target Hunger also maintains thriving gardens with fruits (and vegetables!) that benefit the most vulnerable in their community. Our team saw an obvious connection between our two missions. Our bees help the organization by pollinating their crops, and our beekeepers’ support would add to their efforts. The Target Hunger team was so thrilled to hear about these mysterious winged coworkers while chatting with the Alvéole team that we came close to putting our hives in their gardens. Who knows what the future holds?

“They loved the honey bee and all pollinators because they knew how important these winged workers are for pollinating crops!”

– Evan Gregory, Beekeeping Team Manager in Houston
