Bee Habitats

Woluwe Shopping Center
The Woluwe Shopping Center is home to a buzzing beehive and two wild bee habitats. Along with reinforcing their sustainability strategy, the initiative has given the shopping center a unique way to engage with customers. Information kiosks hosted by their beekeeper draw foot traffic and customized jars of honey produced by the mall's own bees make a coveted customer appreciation gift.
Belgium's National Biodiversity Strategy strives to halt biodiversity loss by encouraging collaboration among different groups, both within Belgium and internationally, while respecting the unique roles of regional and federal governments in environmental matters.

Frequently asked questions
Urban beekeeping in Brussels is regulated by regional ordinances, requiring beekeepers to register their hives with the Fédération Royale Provinciale des Sociétés d’Apiculture and adhere to guidelines regarding hive placement and maintenance to ensure public safety and harmonious coexistence with neighbors. Alvéole’s professional beekeepers ensure compliance with all local and regional regulations in Brussels.
Urban beekeeping is safe, with many successful bee programs operating throughout Brussels. At Alvéole, we work with a special breed of Italian honey bees selected for their docility. Honey bees are gentle creatures who (almost) never sting without reason. Unless they feel threatened, bees have no motivation to sting – in fact, once they sting, they lose their stinger along with a part of their abdomen, and die.Wild bees are as peaceful as honey bees. They technically can sting, but they don’t. Docile and nonterritorial, they’re extremely gentle. Unless they’re being touched, they simply go about their business.
Alvéole's urban beekeeping program aligns with Brussels' sustainability efforts, including initiatives to promote green spaces, biodiversity, and environmental education. Alvéole's approach to beekeeping contributes to Brussels' broader goals of creating a more sustainable urban environment.
